North Shore Colonial

LOCATION: Highland Park, Illinois

TYPE: Renovation & Restoration

SCOPE: Architecture, Interior Design

PROGRAM: Full home renovation including revised space planning, new mechanical systems, and custom millwork.

This 90+ year old home located in Chicago's north shore suburb of Highland Park was restored and reimagined to provide comfort and shelter to families for another 100 years. Believed to be originally built as a summer house for Chicago city dwellers, the home sits on almost an acre of naturally lush landscape perfect for summer nights spent roasting marshmallows over the fire pit. The second floor primary bedroom and two main 'kids' bedrooms each feature their own private sunrooms. Once utilized for achieving a cool nights sleep, the sunrooms are now perfect for quiet lounging or a focused office space. The kitchen space, once carved up into multiple small spaces for household help, is now open and airy for a more modern family environment. The new space allows for gathering around a kitchen island with a connection to the naturally light filled breakfast room and butler's pantry. New materials introduced in the renovation include light stained walnut wood and classic Imperial Danby marble. The natural materials were chosen to age well with the existing classic architecture but also evoke a fresh modern feel.
